Ernest Borgnine will be honored by the Screen Actors Guild with its Life Achievement Award at a ceremony in Los Angeles early next year.

The veteran actor -- who has performed in more than 200 motion pictures, five television series and dozens of television films and guest appearances -- will be presented the award, given annually to an actor who fosters the "finest ideals of the acting profession," SAG said.

Borgnine won the Academy Award for best actor in 1955 for "Marty." He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance in the TV comedy "McHale's Navy," the medical drama, "ER," and a television adaptation of "All Quiet on the Western Front."

"Whether portraying brutish villains, sympathetic every-men, complex leaders or hapless heroes, Ernest Borgnine has brought a boundless energy which, at 93, is still a hallmark of his remarkably busy life and career," SAG National President Ken Howard said in a statement.

"It is with that same joyous spirit that we salute his impressive body of work and his steadfast generosity."

The 17th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, scheduled for Jan. 30, 2011, will be simulcast on TNT and TBS.
