Elizabeth Taylor remains hospitalized in Los Angeles a week after exhibiting symptoms associated with congestive heart failure, but her condition is improving.

The 78-year-old actress's publicists confirmed Taylor's progress Tuesday to People.com.

"Since being admitted, there has been steady improvement in her condition, and over the weekend she has had visits from family and close friends," Taylor's representatives said in a statement. "Her medical team is gratified by her progress to date, and it is hoped and expected that this will continue over the next few days. For now, she will remain under their care in the hospital for continued monitoring."

"She is sleeping and resting a lot, which she really needs to recover her strength," publicist Sally Morrison told People.com. "Due to symptoms of congestive heart failure, she is still being monitored and continues to need rest to recover her strength. She did not have a heart attack."

The star of "Giant,""National Velvet," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" was admitted last week to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after falling ill.
