E3 2017: Top 5 games

UPI News Service, 06/16/2017

The 2017 Electronic Entertainment Expo has come to a close. Here is UPI's list of the top five games that were showcased during the event.

5. Dragon Ball FighterZ

One of the many surprise reveals at E3, Dragon Ball FighterZ impressed fans of the long-running anime series and members of the fighting game community with a crisp and flashy 2D art style that perfectly captures the look and feel of the show.

Announced during Microsoft's Xbox E3 press conference, the trailer for Dragon Ball FighterZ featured lightening-fast combat and ki blasts filling the screen with three-on-three battles between franchise heroes and villains Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu.

The buzz about the title could be felt around publisher Bandai Namco's E3 booth as this new fighting game from developer Arc System Works (Guilty Gear), seemingly stole the spotlight from Capcom's next entry in their popular crossover series, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.Dragon Ball FighterZ arrives for the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC in early 2018.

4. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

In an E3 packed with other big name shooter sequels like Destiny 2 and Star Wars Battlefront II, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus stands above the rest with its over-the-top violence and narrative about a world taken over by the Nazis following World War II.

Main protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz is back with a new array of wacky and high-tech weapons that can be dual-wielded for maximum carnage.

Announced during publisher Bethesda's E3 press conference, the first footage of the first-person shooter also hinted at the game's plot and how B.J. is preparing to be a father as he continues to liberate the United States from Nazi rule. Despite the gore and explosions, Wolfenstein II, like its predecessor, seems set to feature an endearing story about heroism and sacrifice. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus launches Oct. 27 on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.

3. Spider-Man

E3 2017 marked the coming out party for Spider-Man, an exclusive game coming to the Playstation 4, as developer Insomniac unveiled gameplay footage for the first time.

The trailer featured the iconic web-head taking down criminals and swinging through the streets of New York City like never before with impressive graphics and a number of heart-pounding quick-time event sequences that truly showcased Spider-Man's powers.

The game also features a number of characters from the Spider-Man mythos including the villainous Kingpin and fellow web-slinger Miles Morales hinting at a deep and layered story that fans will appreciate. Spider-Man is set to launch in 2018.

2. Anthem

Famed developer Bioware unleashed the first footage of their new series Anthem during EA's press conference at E3, exciting players about the chance to play with friends while exploring a gorgeous alien world filled with towering creatures and loot to collect to outfit your character.

The sci-fi shooter revolves around a society living protected behind a fortified wall. Players will assume the role of Freelancers, soldiers who pilot mech-suits in order to explore the outside world and maintain peace.

"Out there, you either live with the choices you make, or die trying to change them," a mysterious narrator says in a teaser trailer. Anthem is set to arrive for the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC in 2018.

1. Super Mario Odyssey

Leave it to Nintendo to steal the show. By far the most imaginative game shown at E3, Super Mario Odyssey yet again reinvents the platforming genre with everyone's favorite plumber.

This time around, Mario will be navigating a number of imaginative worlds including the realistic looking New Donk City while using a new version of his signature red hat that now appears with eyes and is able to fuse Mario into enemies, giving the player control of a new set of characters.

The possibilities seem endless in Odyssey as Mario takes control of classic enemies such as Goombas and Bullet Bills and even a giant dinosaur along with taxi cabs as they zoom around New Donk City.

Simply put, Odyssey marks a new era for Mario that features the same type of innovation that has kept the series fun and fresh for over 30 years. Super Mario Odyssey arrives for the Nintendo Switch on Oct. 27.
