Barnstable Sgt. Sean Sweeney said he was driving through the Cape Cod Times' rear parking lot in Hyannis about 3 p.m. Sunday when he noticed a mother duck quacking and waddling around a storm drain in the parking lot, the newspaper reported Monday.
The Hyannis Fire Department, which was called about the same time Sweeney arrived, dispatched three firefighters to the scene. One of the firefighters was lowered into the drain and retrieved the ducklings.
Sweeney said he used his patrol car to keep traffic away from the ducklings as they crossed town to Hyannis Harbor.
"I couldn't live with myself if something [bad] happened," he said.
