'Dr. Phil' show appearance results in bigamist's arrest

UPI News Service, 12/13/2005

A man wanted in Chesapeake, Va., for felony bigamy was arrested after TV's "Dr. Phil" show featured his seven marriages and five divorces.

A North Carolina woman recognized Charles "Ed" Hicks on Monday's episode about the dangers of bigamous men and called her sister in Charlotte, N.C., who was dating him -- then called police, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Hicks, 61, was arrested at his girlfriend's home on a warrant issued last week in Virginia, the Mecklenburg (N.C.) County sheriff's office confirmed.

Hicks was arrested after his seventh wife discovered he was still married to his sixth wife, but the charge was dismissed when it was determined he was still married to his fifth wife -- making the sixth marriage invalid, the Post said.

Linda Hembree of Shelby, N.C., said her sister met her bigamous boyfriend on the Internet. He proposed to her last month, but her sister said she wasn't ready to get to married, Hembree said.

"He was the most smooth-talking man I've ever met in my life," she said.
