A pair of suburban Chicago dogs whose day-long adventure started when they jumped into a stranger's car are back at home unharmed, their owner said.

Josh Coffman, who lives near Bolingbrook, said Veruca, a 12-year-old female special-needs Great Dane/golden retriever mix, and Roscoe, an 8-year-old male Rottweiler, ran from his yard Sunday and his roommate saw them jump into a stranger's car, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.
Coffman said the dogs apparently escaped or were freed from the stranger's vehicle and later spotted by a woman who was able to coax them into her home. But they again ran off before she could turn them over to authorities.
Bolingbrook Animal Control spotted Veruca and Roscoe walking together and they were taken to a shelter where Coffman picked them up the following Monday.
"They ate like a king and queen and slept and slept," Coffman said.
"They're just trying to live out their golden years," Coffman said, "I'm so glad everything worked out for the best."
