Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett dead at age 53

UPI News Service, 04/22/2013

The Divinyls' lead singer, Chrissy Amphlett, died at her home in New York after battles with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, her husband said. She was 53.

The Australian singer died Sunday.

Amphlett and her band mates are known for their 1980s and '90s hits, "I Touch Myself," "Boys In Town," "Pleasure and Pain," "Science Fiction" and "Sleeping Beauty."

Her autobiography "Pleasure and Pain: My Life," which detailed her career achievements, her drug and alcohol abuse and love affairs, was published in 2005, said.

"Christine Joy Amphlett succumbed to the effects of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, diseases she vigorously fought with exceptional bravery and dignity," husband Charley Drayton said in a statement.

"She passed gently, in her sleep, surrounded by close friends and family, including husband of 14 years, musician Charley Drayton; her sister, Leigh; nephew, Matt; and cousin Patricia Amphlett. Chrissy's light burns so very brightly. Hers was a life of passion and creativity; she always lived it to the fullest. With her force of character and vocal strength she paved the way for strong, sexy, outspoken women."
