Directors Guild of America announces TV movie award nominees

UPI News Service, 01/10/2005

The list of nominees announced Monday for the Directors Guild of America TV movie awards includes Christopher Reeve, who died of heart failure in October.

Reeve, who had been paralyzed since a horseback riding accident in 1995, was nominated for his work on the A&E movie "The Brooke Ellison Story." The movie told the story of a girl, paralyzed in a car crash at age 11, who went on to become the first quadriplegic graduate of Harvard University.

The other nominees for the DGA TV movie award are Robert Altman ("Tanner on Tanner," Sundance Channel); Stephen Hopkins ("The Life and Death of Peter Sellers," HBO); Lloyd Kramer ("Mitch Albom's the Five People You Meet in Heaven," ABC); and Joe Sargent ("Something the Lord Made," HBO).

DGA President Michael Apted noted that this is the 40th anniversary of the first made-for-television movie.

"The work of the five nominated directors exemplifies the power and strength of the art form for the past 40 years," said Apted, "where controversial social issues and compelling personal stories are writ large for the small screen."

Winners will be announced at a Jan. 29 ceremony in Beverly Hills, Calif.
