The officer, whose name has not been made public, had the car parked in front of the house, started the engine and returned to the house, KMGH-TV, Denver, reported.
When he returned, the the 2003 two-door Monte Carlo with the license plate 810 ETI was missing.
There were no weapons in the car, but it did contain law enforcement items such as two laptop computers, handcuffs and a traffic vest, Denver police said.
The officer could be accused of violating a city ordinance that prohibits leaving a vehicle running unattended.
"This is a violation and we will act accordingly," said John White, of the Denver Police Department.
