Complex considers outside play ban

UPI News Service, 04/04/2011

Parents in a Florida neighborhood said they are outraged at their homeowner's association for suggesting a ban against children playing outside.

Residents of the Persimmon Place subdivision in Edgewater said the homeowner's association is researching the possibility of passing a measure to ban children from playing outside without adult supervision, WFTV, Orlando, Fla., reported Monday.

The measure would also ban skateboarding, using loud toys and playing tag or similar games.

The proposed ban would impose a $100 fine for violations.

"They can put all the rules out there and it is not going to make any difference," resident and parent Angela Hatten told the Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal. "This is just a bunch of old ladies on a power trip."

Board member Beth Lane said the issue is a matter of safety.

"If I had kids and was looking for a place to live (knowing) there is no place for kids to play except in the driveway I would not think that was safe," Lane said.
