Christopher Nolan will not direct a fourth Batman movie, the filmmaker said at a Producers Guild of America conference at Sony Studios in California.
"I don't want to hold anything back," he said at the conference, at which he was on the opening panel.
Nolan said he was inspired by Richard Donner's "Superman" to create a new Batman story separate from the comic book stories.
"I explained the potential of what was exciting to me," he said.
"There really had not been an origin story about this extraordinary figure in an ordinary world."
