Bale picked up the first award of the evening for his portrayal of former real-life boxer Dicky Eklund, a crack addict who tried to help his younger half-brother, Micky Ward, played by Mark Wahlberg, achieve the fighting career he wished he had.
"Fantastic! We've been spoiled rotten [at] that table over there," Bale said of his co-stars upon collecting his award. "We're loving it. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I never really knew who those guys were. I'd always leave the press junket going, 'Who were those characters in that room?' I'd just sit there and they'd argue amongst themselves. ... And now I know who you are and I suddenly realize how wise and spectacularly perceptive those guys really are."
Comedian Ricky Gervais served as host of the event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, poking fun of celebrities Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in his opening monologue. The ceremony honored the best in television and film for 2010.
