Celebrity chef Charlie Trotter died of stroke, officials say

UPI News Service, 11/26/2013

Charlie Trotter died of a stroke at his Chicago home Nov. 5, the Cook County medical examiner's office said Monday.

The celebrity chef was found dead at his Chicago home the morning of Nov. 5 and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Autopsy test results indicated Trotter "died of a cerebrovascular accident as a consequence of hypertensive arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease," Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina said in a statement.

"Neither drugs nor alcohol contributed to his death," he said. "Additionally, there is no scientific evidence to indicate that recent travel contributed to his death, though there was evidence of a prior stroke."

The culinary icon opened Charlie Trotter's restaurant in 1987 and closed it last year.

He was named the country's Outstanding Chef by the James Beard Foundation in 1999, and the following year, Wine Spectator magazine declared Trotter's the best restaurant in the nation.

He was presented with the James Beard Foundation's Humanitarian of the Year award in 2012.
