CBS reportedly considering Katie Couric to replace Dan Rather

UPI News Service, 01/17/2005

CBS executives were reportedly considering Monday replacing outgoing news anchor Dan Rather with NBC's "Today" show co-host Katie Couric.

Time magazine said it has confirmed with official CBS sources that Couric, who still has 16 months on her NBC contract, is the top candidate to take over for Rather when he exits in March. The New York Daily News reported Couric has not publicly expressed interest in the position, but she has said a woman should be considered.

A CBS spokeswoman told Newsday: "We don't comment on rumors."

The New York Daily News said ABC's Ted Koppel, CBS White House correspondent John Roberts and CNN's Anderson Cooper were also being considered for the position. Newsday said Peter Jennings was most likely being considered, as well.
