Award-winning CBS News producer Mary Mapes says the network made her a scapegoat after the infamous pre-election "Memogate" scandal.

Mapes uncovered the Abu Ghraib prison abuse earlier in 2004, The Hollywood Reporter noted Tuesday.
In an excerpt of her book "Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power" in the November Vanity Fair, Mapes said two analysts had cleared the documents used for the report on President Bush's military service on "60 Minutes Wednesday."
She said "full panic" broke out after a key source called the documents into question the following day.
She said an independent panel wasn't able to determine whether the documents were real, yet the same panel's findings led to her firing and the firings of four colleagues.
CBS released a statement Monday calling Mapes' book "revisionist history" and said her "actions damaged CBS News as an organization and brought pain to many colleagues with whom she worked."
