CBS canceled the Wednesday edition of "60 Minutes" amid low ratings for the program, which broadcast and then retracted a report criticizing President Bush.

"This was a ratings call and not a content call," CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves said in announcing the cancellation. "I know that's a question."
The network TV program last year raised questions about the president's National Guard service during the Vietnam era. CBS later retracted the report and fired producer Mary Mapes.
Dan Rather retired as anchor of CBS' main evening newscast to work full-time as a reporter for the Wednesday edition of "60 Minutes."
With cancellation of the Wednesday program, Rather probably will be given a slot on the Sunday edition of "60 Minutes" through 2006, sources told the New York Times.
