CBS has plans to add an op-ed to its "Evening News" newscast, which the New York company has expanded in its commentary scope and entitled "Free Speech."

While "Free Speech" will not air during every night of the newscast, network executives say they believe it will be a valuable addition in the long run, Daily Variety said.
"This isn't our opinion," said Executive Producer Rome Hartman. "Our goal is to offer a new and transparent outlet for the incredible variety and diversity of voices in this country."
Anchor Bob Schieffer is set to step aside when Katie Couric takes over the newscast. Schieffer will become a major contributor to "Speech" instead.
The new section of the news program will offer viewers both notable national figures and other individuals with unique perspectives when it begins this September, said Variety.
