UPI News Service, 02/13/2009

A 100-year-old British woman praised a postal carrier for braving blizzards and dangerous roads to deliver a birthday card from Queen Elizabeth II.

Francese Knowles said she was "thrilled" when letter carrier John Harris, 63, arrived at the Castle Grove nursing home in Bampton, England, with a birthday card from the queen, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

"It was splendid. Mr. Harris did very well. It is a beautiful card, with a lovely picture of the queen and a message. It is an honor," the centenarian said.

Isabelle Kenny, the owner of the care home, praised Harris for braving the weather to make the drive from the Royal Mail delivery office several miles away in Tiverton.

"This is an example of personal service and was above and beyond the call of duty. He could have chosen not to do anything about it," she told The Daily Telegraph.

However, Harris brushed aside the praise.

"I am not being heroic. Some of the roads were quite dodgy but I was just doing my job," he said to the newspaper.
