Britain bans sales of new 'Doctor Who' DVD to children

UPI News Service, 05/16/2005

British censors have banned sales of the new "Doctor Who" series DVD to children, saying it is too violent for young eyes.

The British Board of Film Classification refused a PG rating and prohibited businesses from selling DVDs or videotapes of the popular BBC One TV show to anyone younger than 12, the Times of London reported.

In the series, a billionaire imprisons the last Dalek in the universe and tortures him with drills. Doctor Who demands the Dalek be killed and Dalek ultimately kills himself.

"A good role model should not use torture to satisfy his desire for revenge," a spokeswoman for the classification board said. "It is not an acceptable way to deal with problems of power."

The episode will be edited when it airs in June.

The BBC is selling the new "Doctor Who" to international broadcasters and expects robust Christmas DVD sales.

David Tennant will succeed Christopher Eccleston in the title role next year.
