The comic books spawned three big-screen adaptations and a TV series.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo signed on to direct a remake featuring Cooper as the anti-hero originated by Brandon Lee, an actor accidentally killed on the set of the original 1994 flick.

However, The Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday Cooper has since dropped out due to scheduling conflicts and the movie's producers are looking for a replacement.

Channing Tatum and Mark Wahlberg are in the running for the role of Eric Draven, a rock musician killed while defending his girlfriend, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said. After Draven is magically brought back from the dead, he seeks revenge against those responsible.

Cooper is best known for his work in the "Hangover" comedies.
