Residents of a suburban neighborhood outside New York hope that a drain will help them live with a group of busy beavers.

The beaver's dam in Patterson north of the city in Westchester County has increased the size of Little Pond to the point where its name is a misnomer, the White Plains (N.Y.) Journal reported. The pond has spread into one backyard, causing headaches with basement flooding for homeowner Mary Macris.
The Humane Society's plan is to run six several pipes through the dam to drain water from Little Pond. The pipes will be below the surface, and, with any luck the beavers will not notice that the pond is lower and smaller.
Skip Hilliker of the Humane Society said that trapping the beavers would only be a temporary solution since the narrow valley would attract more of them.
Macris told the newspaper that she doesn't care how it's done as long as the waters recede.
