Of all the New York City-branded apparel available for sale, a beat-up and dirty looking Department of Sanitation cap has become the top-selling item.

Royalties from sales of the merchandise available in Target stores, city souvenir shops and online go to fund city departments, such as Parks and Recreation, or the police and fire departments.
But the sanitation hat is the top seller, the Los Angeles Times reports. It is a distressed brown color with a frayed, oily looking bill and the department's light blue DSNY patch.
Lloyd Haymes, vice president of licensing for NYC Marketing, said the scruffiness was by design.
"We thought there could be a unique way to spin it as a hip, grunge feel, a little bit edgy," he said.
Another sanitation product selling well is a denim-blue T-shirt bearing the image of a city garbage truck and the line: "Clanging Your Cans Since 1929."
