Nicole and Clay's on-screen romance

Nicole and Clay were immediately attracted to each other on Season 6 of Bachelor in Paradise, but Clay was a few months fresh out of an eight-month relationship with Angela Amezcua, whom he met through their mutual friend Chris Randone.

Moments before Clay and Nicole's first date in Paradise, their co-star Annaliese Puccini stirred up some trouble by confronting Clay and telling him that he wasn't ready for another serious relationship.

Annaliese accused Clay of not being over his ex-girlfriend and said his intentions were not to find love and get engaged in Paradise.

Annaliese wasn't happy Clay was on Paradise because she said the former pro football player had been stringing Angela along and giving her "hope."

Annaliese claimed Clay and Angela had met up in Chicago two weeks prior to the show and even looked at houses when they were together.

Annaliese also alleged Clay said he wanted to marry Angela but needed to find himself first.

"Jumping into Paradise is not where you find yourself!... I don't think he's here for the right reasons. I don't think he's in it for a relationship," said Annaliese, who admitted she was tired of men not following through on their promises.

Annaliese told Clay that he was "crushing" Angela by being on the show, but Clay said he and Angela broke up three months previously and had been talking about houses and babies "earlier on" in their relationship.

Annaliese, however, alleged Clay and Angela had discussed baby names the day before they broke up.

Clay told Annaliese that she was very misinformed and should focus on herself and her own relationships. Clay acknowledged his breakup from Angela was hard, but he had never even told the girl he loved her during the course of their relationship.

Clay insisted he had moved on from Angela and was ready to "get back out there" in the dating game.

"At this point in my life, I'm ready to find the person I'm meant to be with," Clay said.

For their date, Nicole and Clay went to a carnival with donkeys, games, lights and more. The couple danced to the music of a local band, and Clay said he thought Nicole was so much fun and gorgeous.

Clay talked to Nicole about how he found it "hard" at times to be away from Angela but he was totally over the relationship and believed they just weren't a perfect match.

The couple kissed and watched fireworks together on their first date, and Clay quickly determined he and Nicole had "a special connection" and it had been a long time since he was so excited about someone.

Nicole was also on Cloud 9 and said Clay made her feel like she's "the sexiest woman alive."

At the season's first Rose Ceremony, Clay gave his rose to Nicole.

But then Jordan Kimball arrived in Paradise, and he and Nicole went out on a date. Nicole also later dated Christian Estrada, and Clay quickly realized she was "a hot commodity" at the Mexican resort.

Nicole liked feeling like the Bachelorette in Paradise and didn't mind playing a little "hard to get."

But Clay found it difficult to watch Nicole go on dates with different guys.

"Obviously it sucks. It's tough. I'm starting to develop real feelings for this woman. Real feelings. I don't think I've had feelings evolve this fast ever, and now I'm in a situation where I could end up heartbroken," Clay vented to the cameras.

There was a clear spark between Nicole and Christian, but Tayshia Adams pointed out Clay was the total package -- a good and successful guy with a good heart -- and she hoped Nicole appreciated that.

Nicole said Christian made her feel like they were boyfriend and girlfriend already, and she was taken with his charm, confidence and aggressive approach to dating.

Nicole, in fact, had been wishing Clay would be more aggressive and assertive. Nicole feared Clay was "too passive" for her because she's into a "manly-man."

However, after Jordan and Estrada got into a fight on the beach, Nicole ran back into Clay's arms and the pair have been inseparable ever since.

But that doesn't mean there weren't bumps along the way leading up to Bachelor in Paradise's finale, which airs Tuesday, September 17 at 8PM ET/PT.

For instance, Clay bumped into Angela again at Chris and Krystal Nielson's wedding.

Clay and Angela reunited at Chris and Krystal's wedding

It appeared Clay's feelings for Angela came rushing back at Chris and Krystal Nielson's wedding.

After the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom asked only a portion of the Bachelor in Paradise cast to join them for the afterparty/reception. Clay was one of those people, but Nicole was not invited.

Nicole -- who admitted she hated Clay's ex -- worried Angela would try to win Clay back that night. She felt Angela had everything to do with Clay being invited to the afterparty without a date.

At the afterparty, however, Angela seemed to be hitting it off with Chase McNary from JoJo Fletcher's season of The Bachelorette. Clay was feeding Angela wedding cake, and the intimate scene affected Clay.

Clay then asked Angela to sit down for a chat, but he wasn't sure she'd even want to talk to him since the last time they had spoken was their breakup.

Clay told Angela guys had been asking him if it was okay they could talk to her, and he confessed it was difficult to see and he still cared about her a lot. Clay told Angela she is special to him and a sweetheart.

Angela didn't understand how he could be ready to date in Paradise after their relationship ended not long ago, and Clay acknowledged his stint on the show was "selfish" and he was sorry.

"You said you needed to figure things out, you needed to be alone, and you needed to find yourself," Angela said.

Clay explained he had been focused on getting on an NFL team roster, but when that didn't happen, he started to think about what he's doing for the rest of his life "and starting anew, almost."

Angela said all she wanted for Clay was to see him happy, and he expressed again how he cared about her a lot -- as Tayshia watched from a distance.

Clay returned to Paradise after the wedding

Once Clay returned to the beach, he was shown telling Mike Johnson his breakup with Angela was really tough. He said he never cried much in his life but shed a lot of tears over her.

Tayshia thought Clay was an amazing guy, but she thought he had faltered during his conversation with Angela at the wedding. Tayshia said Clay's actions showed he was still interested in his previous relationship and he chose Angela over Nicole the previous night.

Tayshia therefore advised Nicole to talk to Clay and get some answers. Nicole worried he wasn't 100 percent over Angela, but when she talked to him, Clay was open and honest about his prior conversation with Angela.

Clay said Angela felt like he had led her on in their relationship and she had reached out in attempt to get back together a couple of times.

Clay told Nicole that Angela was special to him, and the former pro football player admitted to cameras his feelings for Angela couldn't be turned off or on like a light switch.

However, Clay asked Nicole not to worry about his past with Angela at all.

"If Clay were to even consider going back to his ex, I'd be so hurt," Nicole told the cameras.

Angela entered Paradise

Angela joined the cast of Bachelor in Paradise, and Nicole admitted it was her "biggest fear personified."

Clay's face told Nicole he was "shooken up" by Angela's entrance although he claimed to no longer have feelings for her. Nicole worried Angela might get in the way of the strong relationship she had spent the whole season building with Clay.

Clay didn't understand why Angela would want to date someone in front of him and watch him date another girl. Clay was also rubbed the wrong way by Angela's appearance in Paradise given all the guys -- Angela's dating options -- had become his good friends.

Nicole didn't think there was a shot Angela was over Clay, and she called Angela an "intruder."

"Angela, get a life. He dumped you. He doesn't want you. Clay is way too good of a man to lose, and I am so ready to fight for this relationship," Nicole said in a confessional.

But Angela promised Nicole she didn't come to Paradise to steal her man, nor did she want to make any waves.

Clay told his friends it was brutal to watch Angela go on dates with other guys, such as Mike Johnson.

"If I knew before this situation Angela was going to be in Paradise, I wouldn't be here," Clay told the cameras, before telling the guys her presence was taking away from what he had with Nicole.

Clay therefore felt the need to have a talk with Angela in private so they could both get on the same page and hopefully move on.

Angela and Clay started fighting on the beach about what led to their breakup, with Clay admitting he wanted more from a woman who looked forward to being just a wife and mother.

But Angela put an end to it and just asked Clay to co-exist with her on the beach. Angela told Clay that she'd always care about him but their relationship was over and it was time to move on.

Angela then focused on pursuing a romance with Chase, and Nicole and Clay exchanged roses at each subsequent Rose Ceremony and got more and more serious.

Nicole wanted more from Clay

Before the final Rose Ceremony of the season, Clay and Nicole went on a romantic date.

Nicole had been avoiding asking Clay serious questions about their future because she could sense he had been holding back. But Nicole decided to be open with Clay at dinner and cut to the chase.

"Dropping the 'L' word is a big deal for me too. If I were to introduce you to my parents or my family and maybe move to Chicago, I would want to know for sure you're 100 percent in and willing to take that risk to put your heart on the line for me... I'm still falling for you... Do you think you're falling -- a little bit?" Nicole asked Clay.

Clay had a roundabout way of saying he cared for Nicole but wasn't in love with her yet. Clay said Nicole was his best friend on the beach and he loved spending time with her.

"I do think I'm starting to fall in love with you. I am. I just can't say right now that I'm in love," Clay said.

Nicole felt nervous about her future with Clay as a result, but she just decided to enjoy the night. The couple danced to the music of a guitarist, but Nicole couldn't help but think about how she wouldn't be able to get engaged to a man who's unsure about her.

Clay still gave Nicole his rose at the last Rose Ceremony, but then Bachelor in Paradise host Chris Harrison showed up to Paradise and told the remaining couples only to accept a Fantasy Suite date if they're very serious about each other and could truly envision a future together.

"I need you to be brutally honest with yourselves and with each other and think, 'Are we ready to take that next step as a couple?' And if you're not, it's time to check out of Paradise and head back home," Harrison explained.

At this point, Chase called it quits on his relationship with Angela, and Nicole was still wondering if Clay would ever come to love her.

Nicole thought the idea of her relationship not working out with Clay was awful.

Along Nicole's feelings were further along in the relationship, Clay still saw potential in his romance with Nicole lasting outside of Paradise, so they opted to go in the Fantasy Suite.

Nicole said she could truly see herself getting engaged to Clay if everything went according to plan.

What happens next between Clay and Nicole? Do they get engaged in Paradise?

Nicole and Clay did not grow closer during their overnight Fantasy Suite date, according to Reality Steve spoiler blogger Steve Carbone.

Instead, Nicole allegedly became frustrated with the man she had committed herself to.

"On 'Decision Day,' Nicole breaks up with Clay because he won't tell her he's in love with her," Carbone wrote in his July 23 blog posting.

Clay also reportedly did not want to propose to Nicole, and so she dumped him and they left the show broken up.
