Avril Lavigne named most dangerous celebrity to search online for by McAfee

UPI News Service, 09/19/2017

Cybersecurity software company McAfee has named Avril Lavigne the 2017 most dangerous celebrity due to the potential risk involved with searching for her name online.

The study conducted by McAfee for the eleventh year in a row, found that searching for the singer-songwriter generates the most dangerous results that could expose consumers to malicious websites and malware.

The 32-year-old is the first female musician to take the number one spot on the top ten list taking the place of Amy Schumer who topped last year's list.

Lavigne is followed by other musicians on the top ten list of most dangerous celebrities as searching for a celebrity's name and "free mp3" generated the most potentially malicious websites.

In second place is Bruno Mars followed by, in order, Carly Rae Jepsen, Zayn Malik, Celine Dion, Calvin Harris, Justin Bieber, Diddy, Katy Perry and Beyonce.

"In today's digital world, we want the latest hit albums, videos, movies and more, immediately available on our devices," chief consumer security evangelist at McAfee Gary Davis said in a statement.

"Consumers often prioritize their convenience over security by engaging in risky behavior like clicking on suspicious links that promise the latest content from celebrities. It's imperative that they slow down and consider the risks associated with searching for downloadable content. Thinking before clicking goes a long way to stay safe online."
