"Avatar" was finally knocked out of the No. 1 spot during the weekend, with "Dear John" raking in $32.4 million to top the U.S. box office.

"Avatar" was second with a healthy $23.6 million. The innovative new film had led the box office for seven straight weekends.

"From Paris with Love" was third with $8.12 million; "Edge of Darkness" fourth with more than $7 million; "Tooth Fairy" fifth with $6.5 million; "When in Rome" sixth with $5.5 million.

"The Book of Eli" was seventh with more than $4.83 million; "Crazy Heart" eighth with $3.65 million; "Legion (2010)" ninth with $3.4 million.

"Sherlock Holmes" was 10th with $2.63 million.
