The 18-year-old student was arrested Thursday in Queenstown after a shop worker reported he was allegedly attempting to steal a rugby jersey from the store, The Southland Times, Invercargill, New Zealand, reported Friday.

Police said they searched the accommodation where the suspect was staying with 17 other students and three teachers, and discovered the teenager was allegedly hiding an "Aladdin's cave" of stolen goods, including clothing, jewelry and ski goggles.

The stolen goods were worth more than $1,000 total, police said.

One teacher is remaining in Queenstown with the student while the rest of the group returns home to Canberra, officials said.

The student is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

His name was not reported.
