Actress Ashley Judd, daughter of country singer Naomi Judd, said 47 days in a Texas treatment center helped her conquer lifelong emotional issues.

"I needed help," Judd said in Glamour magazine's August issue, obtained by USA Today.

Judd, 38, called her therapy "life-altering" and said it improved friendships and her 4 1/2-year marriage to racecar driver Dario Franchitti.

Ashley Judd was approached by counselors when she visited Shades of Hope Treatment Center in Buffalo Gap, Texas, where her sister, Wynonna, was being treated for food addiction. Because the sisters came out of the same environment, the counselors suspected they shared a similar pain.

"Supposedly, my sister was the 'messed-up' one, and I was the 'perfect' one," she said.

Ashley Judd described their childhood as "chaotic" and "dysfunctional," being shuttled among their mother, father and grandparents. She responded by becoming a "perfect" child, she said.

Before treatment, she had struggled with depression, isolation and co-dependent relationships.

"I was in so much pain," she said. "I was unhappy, and now I'm happy. Now, even when I'm having a rough day, it's better than my best day before treatment."
