Johns is perhaps best known for his work as an engineer on the Stones' classic 1972 album "Exile on Main St."

He served as the engineer during recording at a mansion on the French coast rented by guitarist Keith Richards. Johns was then selected to mix the album in Los Angeles, a massive undertaking the merits of which are still debated among music fanatics, The New York Times said.

Johns died of a bleeding ulcer April 7 in Van Nuys, Calif., his wife Annette said.

Johns also worked on a string of albums by Led Zeppelin in the 1970s and on the band Television's "Marquee Moon." He went on to work with hard rock bands in the 1990s, including Van Halen, the Times said.

Johns was born in 1950 in Surrey, England. His learned the recording craft from his older brother, Glyn, who was a sound technician and producer who worked with The Beatles and The Who.
