Canary, 71, has played Adam Chandler on the soap opera since 1983. His portrayal has earned him five Daytime Emmy Awards.

"My career on 'All My Children' has given me more than words could ever convey, both professionally and personally. I have cherished each and every moment. I would like to thank all the fans who have tuned in throughout the years. Their love and support has meant the world to me," Canary said in a statement Wednesday.

The New York Post said Canary lives in Connecticut and did not want to relocate when the show recently moved to Los Angeles from New York.
