$196,000 pedestrian crossing unusable

UPI News Service, 06/25/2010

Officials in British town spent $196,000 on a pedestrian crossing that can't be used because of a couple's driveway.

The Holmfirth crossing, which includes lights that haven't been turned on since they were installed two years ago, was deemed too unsafe to use because pedestrians would have to stand in Angela and Robin Wray's driveway while waiting to cross, the Daily Mail reported Friday.

Robin Wray, 66, and his wife Angela, 63, got permission to install the driveway only months before the crossing was approved by Kirklees Council, which unsuccessfully tried to prohibit the couple from using the driveway.

Officials said it would cost an additional $45,000 to remove the unusable crossing.
