The Roland Emmerich-directed adventure film raked in $35.73 million in estimated ticket sales to take over the No. 1 spot in its opening weekend, Box Office Mojo reported Sunday. It knocked last week's top film, Will Ferrell's "Semi-Pro," all the way down to fourth.
"Semi-Pro" garnered $5.9 million in sales in its second week.
Another new offering, the Martin Lawrence comedy "College Road Trip," started at No. 2 with $14 million in gate receipts, while "Vantage Point" slipped from second to third with $7.5 million.
Debuting at No. 5 with $5.71 million in estimated receipts, was "The Bank Job," a thriller starring Jason Statham and Saffron Burrows.
Rounding out the top tier were "The Spiderwick Chronicles," $4.8 million; "The Other Boleyn Girl," $4 million; "Jumper," $3.75 million; "Step Up 2 the Streets," $3.05 million; and "Fool's Gold," $2.8 million.
Leaving the Top 10 were "Penelope,""Definitely, Maybe,""No Country for Old Men" and "Juno," which spent 13 weeks among the box office elite.
