Reality TV World announces 2003 Blowie Awards nominees, opens ballot for voting - Reported by: Admin on 09-17-2003
RealityTVWorld.com today announced the nominees for the second annual Reality TV World "Blowie" Awards, which are presented yearly to outstanding productions, performances and situations in unscripted television programming. Consisting of 22 award categories with a total of 164 nominees, the Reality TV World "Blowie" Awards range from the serious to the frivolous, providing an overview of the reality TV programming in the year gone by.
Although the 2002-03 television season featured a creative mix of unscripted programming, five programs received the lion's share of nominations, and the top three were all broadcast by the CBS Television Network. Leading the way were the stunning 54 nominations recorded by the Emmy-nominated "Survivor," which had three editions included in the eligibilty period for the Blowies. CBS's summer success "Big Brother" received 20 nominations, while critics' favorite and Emmy-nominated "The Amazing Race" picked up 17. ABC's "The Mole," which aired both a celebrity edition and a regular edition during the 2002-03 season, followed just behind with 16 nominations, and Fox's Emmy-nominated sensation "American Idol" closed out the "Big 5" with 12 nominations.
In addition to the awards for outstanding accomplishments, the Reality TV World Blowie Awards also feature categories for worst mistakes and a heavy serving of humor in some of the lesser categories. For example, Flo Pesenti, co-winner of "The Amazing Race 3," achieved the dubious distinction of being nominated in both the Least Favorite Personality and Biggest Drama Queen categories.
The first annual Reality TV World Blowie Awards, which were announced in March 2002, covered reality programming broadcast during the 2001 calendar year. However, with the recent explosion in year-round reality programming, the Blowie Awards Committee (as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences once did with the Oscars) revised the end of the annual eligibility period to conform with the television broadcast season, which traditionally ends at the end of May sweeps each year. As a result, this year's award eligibility period began January 1, 2002 and extended through May 21, 2003 -- the end of the 2002-03 TV season. Thus, the second annual Blowie Awards covers an extended 17 month period instead of the usual year -- a period that began with predictions of doom for reality TV after the Sept. 11 tragedy ... and ended with America riveted to the final showdown between Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken.
In nominations by network, CBS managed to garner more than half of the total: 91 nominations out of a total of 164, aided strongly by the fact that "Survivor" alone received more nominations than any rival network did. Although ABC and Fox were noted for all of the reality shows they introduced during the 2002-03 season, they still only placed second and third, with 29 and 24 nominations respectively. Cable networks MTV, with 6 nominations, and USA Network, with 5, rounded out the top five. NBC recorded a scant 3 nominations, while E!, The WB, and The Learning Channel each received two nominations and ESPN earned one.
Voting for the Reality TV World Blowie Awards will take place on the RealityTVWorld.com website from now through Friday, October 3, 2002 and is open to any member of the public. Voting information is available on the RealityTVWorld.com home page or by visiting the 2003 Blowie Awards webpage. The software used to power the balloting site is designed to prevent multiple voting and will discard any duplicate submissions.
The award winners will be announced by RealityTVWorld.com on Friday, October 10, 2003.

$1,045,000 winner of ABC's 'Push, Nevada' game announced - Reported by: Admin on 11-14-2002
ABC has announced that Mark Nakamoto, 24, of West New York, New Jersey, is the lucky viewer who claimed the $1,045,000 prize from the Push, Nevada Game.
Nakomoto solved the "Push, Nevada" puzzle after watching the "Push, Nevada" series and the Final Clue, broadcast live during ABC's "Monday Night Football" on October 28, which completed the information viewers needed to solve the puzzle. The Final Clue led viewers to a series of letters taken from the episode clues that, together with a cipher, corresponded to a telephone number. Less than two minutes after the final piece of the puzzle was broadcast, Nakamoto, an assistant editor for a Manhattan publishing company, was the first contestant to call the winning number.
Nakamoto wasn't the only viewer to figure the puzzle out, just the quickest to respond. During the first 20 minutes after the Final Clue was broadcast, more than 500 people solved the puzzle and called the winning number. Within the first 24 hours, more than 10,000 viewers had called.
The Push, Nevada Game was the largest TV and online game of skill ever played in America (for a prize of over 1 million dollars). The TV portion of the game is in a class of its own, as it was the only nationwide game of skill that could be played and won by simply watching a TV show. An estimated number of players upwards of 600,000 participated in the game, based on a percentage of broadcast viewers and online numbers. Additionally, close to 200,000 of these players interacted with the online portion of the game, rivaling some of the largest online games in existence.
"Push, Nevada," a mystery about a strange Nevada town where nothing is as it seems, had its last original airing on the ABC Television Network on October 24. Sean Bailey, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Chris Moore were executive producers of "Push, Nevada," from LivePlanet in association with Touchstone Television.
LivePlanet creates, markets and distributes entertainment experiences that break down the barriers between traditional media, new media and the physical world. LivePlanet calls this new kind of entertainment experience "integrated media." Ben Affleck, Sean Bailey, Matt Damon and Chris Moore founded LivePlanet in June 2000.

ABC formally announces 'Push, Nevada' cancellation, series to end October 24th - Reported by: Admin on 10-10-2002
Susan Lyne, president, ABC Entertainment, today announced several changes to the Network's lineup, including that announcement that "Push, Nevada" will air until Thursday, October 24, culminating the critically-acclaimed series' run with the seventh episode.
Viewers who have been playing along with the game that is woven into the weekly episodes will still have the chance to win the grand prize, in excess of one million dollars. Details will be announced shortly and revised rules will be posted on abc.com.
"Both 'That Was Then' and 'Push, Nevada' are creatively very strong, but we were simply unable to attract a mass audience for them," added Ms. Lyne. "We want viewers of 'Push' to see the outcome of Prufrock's investigation, and airing it through the seventh episode will give closure to the storyline."
'Push, Nevada' cancellation announcement expected today, $1,000,000 game to complete - Reported by: Admin on 10-10-2002
Variety reports that ABC is expected to announce the first two cancellations of the season this morning, as "That Was Then" and "Push, Nevada" are expected to formally get the ax and ABC announces some other schedule changes.
The mystery drama/reality series "Push" will have its seventh and final broadcast on October 24, 2002. Producers will ensure enough clues will have aired to allow viewers to compete for the $1 million prize being offered in connection with the skein.
With "Monk" moving to Mondays and "Push" off the cancelled, ABC's upcoming Thursday plans are still sketchy, but the network will likely vamp with specials and reality programming until "Dinotopia" premieres on Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, with two back-to-back episodes. An ABC spokesman refused to confirm any changes.
Michael Eisner hints at move to ABC Family channel, HBO-style "multiple plays" for ABC's struggling 'Push, Nevada' series - Reported by: Admin on 10-08-2002
Broadcasting & Cable reports that during a Goldman Sachs conference in New York, Disney Chairman/CEO Michael Eisner seems to have hinted at the upcoming fate of the Disney-owned ABC Network's quirky but struggling "Push, Nevada" telelvision series.
While addressing the topic of greater "repurposing" of programming between the ABC Network and the ABC Family cable channel — an industry term for the quick repeat of ABC sitcoms and dramas on ABC Family -- Eisner argued that repurposing would strengthen ABC, not weaken it, as many ABC affiliates believe.
"Take the new show Push, Nevada as an example," he said. "There is no way a quirky new kind of show like that can get sampled on Thursday night," up against all the formidable network competition. But give it "multiple plays on ABC Family, and you find ways to bring attention to it like HBO and other cable services bring attention to their product. Then you can bring it back on the network once you start to build a cult following."
Now is it just us, or does it sound like ABC has already decided on a plan of action??
Media beginning to report on upcoming cancellation of "Push, Nevada" - Reported by: Admin on 10-08-2002
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that it's not official yet, but it looks like ABC's "Push, Nevada" will disappear from the ABC programming schedule after the Thursday, October 10th episode. In doing so, "Push" would become the first casualty of the Fall 2002 network television season.
According to the Sentinel, instead of just dropping the show now, ABC would air enough clues for someone to win the $1 million Internet prize associated with the mystery show.

Struggling 'Push, Nevada' gets temporary reprieve from ABC - Reported by: Admin on 10-03-2002
Myinky.com reports that ABC's "Push, Nevada" has earned a one-week reprieve before the network decides what to do with the heavily promoted but lightly viewed series.
ABC has confirmed that a few options besides outright cancellation are under consideration. One of those includes "repurposing" - or re-airing - the show on sister cable channel ABC Family, or perhaps moving the show to cable. Kevin Brockman, ABC's senior vice president of communications, said the network is looking at "a lot" of options. "No one is running around panicking, but obviously it's not what we wanted to see last week."
"Push" has been considered a vital show for ABC in its near-desperate fight to bring back viewers. Besides the production tie with Affleck, "Push" has been ABC's poster show to prove that the network can still develop quality programs that aren't assembly-line sitcoms or standard-issue cop dramas. But "Push" (just 4.4 million viewers on Thursday) was crushed by a record-breaking "CSI" (31 million).

'Push, Nevada' premiere draws solid ratings, wins time period - Reported by: Admin on 09-18-2002
ABC's Tuesday night, which included the series premiere of "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" and the series previews of "Life with Bonnie" and "Push, Nevada", made ABC the most-watched network of the evening. ABC attracted 3.2 million more viewers (12.3 million vs. 9.1 million) than second place FOX.
"Everyone at ABC is absolutely delighted with last night's outstanding performances of '8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter,' 'Life with Bonnie' and 'Push, Nevada,'" stated Susan Lyne, President, ABC Entertainment. "A lot of hard work went into this, and our strategy of premiering early for advanced audience sampling worked. Despite being very distinct shows that appealed to different core audiences, they each performed -- which is a testament to our marketing, publicity and company-wide synergy efforts. They really made a difference, banging the ABC drum loudly enough to bring in viewers even in the face of the Network's limited promotional reach this summer."
The series preview of "Push, Nevada" saw solid sampling, as the series made ABC the most-watched network in the hour (12.0 million). The drama also won its time period among Adults 25-54 (5.2/12). The preview of "Push, Nevada" posted ABC's second-best performance in the time period in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 (4.2/11) for a series in 6 months (since 3/19/02), behind the season finale of "NYPD Blue" (5/21/02). Demonstrating strong male appeal, "Push Nevada" won its hour among Men 25-54 (5.0/12) and placed second among Men 18-49 (4.1/11). In both demos, "Push, Nevada" scored the time period's second-best rating for a series in 6 months (since 3/19/02), behind the season finale of "NYPD Blue" (5/21/02).

ABC Gets Pushy as It Promos New 'Push' Show - Reported by: Admin on 09-06-2002
Variety reports that ABC's "Good Morning America" Wednesday served up a generous plug for a new series on the network -- unbeknownst to the producers of the breakfastcast. As weathercaster Tony Perkins was doing his usual stop-and-chats with members of the show's streetside studio audience, he happened upon several members of the Push, Nev., hockey team. The rowdy players even foisted a Push Hockey T-shirt on Perkins.
The only problem? There is no such place as Push, Nev., -- except in the minds of the writers of ABC new hybrid drama/reality series "Push, Nevada," from executive producers Sean Bailey and Ben Affleck. The "hockey players" were actually actors hired by ADD, a marketing company hired by ABC to mount a guerilla PR campaign on behalf of the show. Apparently neither ADD nor ABC Entertainment, however, let anyone at ABC News in on the joke in advance. "Good Morning America" does have audience vetters who are supposed to weed out pranksters like those from ADD, but they didn't catch on in time.
An ABC News rep declined comment. But not surprisingly, "Good Morning America" execs contacted their West Coast peers when they realized what had happened, according to network insiders in Burbank. ABC Entertainment execs assured them such a stunt won't happen again. "This is a show that is very different and we are trying to market it in a different way," an ABC spokesman said. Nonetheless, he added, "ADD didn't take into account the kinds of questions that could arise by enacting this sort of strategy within the same company (airing the show)."

"The Black Box" - A murder in Push sends Jim looking for clues to the killer's identity, but he's stonewalled by the town sheriff (Eric Allan Kramer) and his dimwitted deputy (Liz Vassey), who insist the death was a suicide, and a reclusive tattoo artist who may know whodunit. Meanwhile, a team of well-dressed men claiming to be from the Nevada Gaming Commission arrive to deal with the consequences of the death, and Mary moves to retrieve the stolen loot, in the time period premiere of "Push, Nevada," THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.
"Push, Nevada" stars Derek Cecil as Jim Prufrock and Scarlett Chorvat as Mary. Recurring stars are Liz Vassey as Dawn, Eric Allan Kramer as Sheriff Gaines, Melora Walters as Grace and Raymond J. Barry as Sloman.

In the premiere episode, "The Amount," written by Affleck and Bailey, mild-mannered IRS agent Jim Prufrock (Derek Cecil) travels to a remote desert town in search of missing money and stumbles on a place where mystery, danger and peculiar characters lurk around every corner. Everyone has a secret in Push, Nevada, but no one is talking, unless they're telling Jim to get out of town -- fast. Every word, every sign, every gesture could hold a clue to solving the riddle of this tiny Nevada town.
The mystery begins when a fax from the Versailles Casino in Push is sent by accident (perhaps) to Jim, alerting him to a sizable accounting error -- and an embezzlement scheme involving a fortune in cash. Casino honcho Silas Bodnick (Jon Polito) refuses to talk about the missing money, so Jim's investigation leads him to Push, where nothing is as it seems.
Push is a town where neighborhood couples indulge in synchronized romance each night at 9:15; where the only casino, the Versailles, pays out the biggest jackpots in the state; and where the lonely look for companionship at "Sloman's," a slow-dance bar. It's there that Jim meets Mary (Scarlett Chorvat), a beautiful and enigmatic woman who tells him that the mystery of Push is, "like all the best secrets, not quick in the telling," and warns him to go home before he gets hurt. A determined man, Jim plans to find out what mystery lies behind Push, no matter what the risk. All along the way, a shadowy team of high-tech operatives monitors his every encounter with the town's denizens.
Each episode will have new puzzles to follow and solve, along with a dazzling array of guest stars. In a next-generation twist, viewers following "Push, Nevada," the mystery series, will also be able to play "Push, Nevada," the game. Every episode of the show will hold clues to solving the game, beginning with the premiere episode, "The Amount." At the end of the 13 episodes, the clues will add up to a solution, and the winning audience member will be able to claim the stolen money.
"Push, Nevada" stars Derek Cecil as Jim Prufrock and Scarlett Chorvat as Mary. Guest starring are Jon Polito as Silas Bodnick, Armand Assante as Mr. Smooth, Conchata Ferrell as Martha, Josh Todd as Job, Gary Grossman as Ira, Andy Kreiss as the Versailles clerk, Monty Bane as the nude man, Melora
