The 41-year-old country star said on Thursday's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that he considered himself "fat and ugly" his "whole life" until the magazine chose him for its annual issue.

"I have been fat and ugly my whole life. If only for one year I get to be sexy, I am going to milk this for everything that it's worth," he told host Ellen DeGeneres.

Shelton appeared in a dressed-down tuxedo on the talk show, but jokingly said he will make additional style changes, including bringing back the mullet hairstyle.

"The mullet's coming back. The mullet's coming back this year," he said. "That used to be ugly. It's officially sexy now. It's the law. It's like the sun coming up -- I'm sexy."

Shelton said in his cover interview with People that he had a different reaction to the title than fellow "The Voice" coach Adam Levine, who received the honor in 2013, because he never considered himself sexy.

"I think to describe myself as a child, one thing comes to mind. And that's fat," the singer said. "People say I haven't changed since before I made it. And I'm still fat today. That's proof!"

"When [people] would say to Adam, 'Mr. Sexy,' you'd always see him go, 'Well, awwww...'" he added.

"If you say that to me, it's going to be, 'You're damn right, I'm Mr. Sexy! I've been ugly my whole life, if I can be sexy for a year, I'm taking it. I'm taking it."

Shelton jokingly told DeGeneres he feels "bad" for girlfriend Gwen Stefani because the spotlight is on him.

He said being overshadowed will be a "humbling experience" for the 48-year-old star, whom he called a "symbol of beauty."
