Alaska police get numerous calls about Estonian salesmen

UPI News Service, 07/23/2013

Authorities in Alaska said a pair of encyclopedia salesmen who were the subject of several complaints seem to have moved on to another city.

Alaska State Troopers said several residents in Fairbanks and North Pole called police to complain about the Estonian men asking personal questions about residents and their neighbors, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported Tuesday.

"They were selling children's encyclopedias," Sgt. Mike Roberts said. "One of them was hitting Fairbanks and one was hitting North Pole."

Roberts said the salesmen were "pushy and kind of aggressive," but were also "very polite and professional." He said investigators determined the men were not violating any laws.

"They have accents and don't necessarily understand American and Alaska subculture," he said. "They don't take hints to go away. Basically to end contact with them you had to turn around and close the door."

Roberts said a North Pole resident may be facing charges for allegedly assaulting one of the salesmen during an attempted sales call.

Roberts said Fairbanks and North Pole residents don't need to worry about the men, anymore.

"Last I heard their plan was to leave Fairbanks and go to Anchorage," he said. "That was a week ago. I think they're in Anchorage now."
