Italian island mayor bans swimsuits in town center
UPI News Service, 07/25/2013
The mayor of an Italian island city has issued an ordinance banning people from wearing swimsuits in the town center.
The ordinance, which carries a $661 fine for violations, bans the wearing of bikinis, thongs and other swimming apparel in the town center of Lipari, near Sicily, ANSA reported Thursday.
Mayor Marco Giorgianni, who issued the ordinance, said residents and tourists had filed complaints about inappropriate attire in the non-beach areas of town.
Signs warning residents and tourists of the new rule and the potential fine have been posted in the town square, officials said.
