Mich. man arrested after driving tank-like vehicle in neighborhood

UPI News Service, 07/09/2013

Police said a Michigan man driving a World War II-era tank on town streets firing blanks from its machine gun during a July 4 fireworks display may be charged.

John Lind, 49, a veteran of three military branches and a war re-enacter, is the director for the Detroit Arsenal for Democracy museum, which includes several restored armed vehicles used during World War II.

One of them is the museum's 1944 M20 armored utility car, nicknamed the Lonely Bull. It is equipped with a .50-caliber machine gun that's been modified to fire compressed gas, emit a bright flash and make a realistic gunfire sound, the Detroit Free Press said.

Lind took the Lonely Bull out for a spin during July 4 fireworks near his Shelby Township home -- shocking and terrifying some neighbors who thought someone was on a shooting rampage.

Local police were flooded with 911 calls and multiple agencies swarmed the neighborhood, Shelby Police Chief Roland Woelkers said.

Lind was arrested and released after posting $10,000 bail. He has not been formally charged with a crime, Woelkers said. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident.
