Paul McCartney delves deep into Beatles catalog at Bonnaroo

UPI News Service, 06/15/2013

Paul McCartney played two Beatles songs he'd never before played as a solo act at Tennessee's Bonnaroo festival, USA Today reported.

For the first time, the former Beatle played "Lovely Rita" and "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" as part of his 2 1/2 hour set of 38 songs Friday night at the four-day music festival in Manchester, Tenn.

He played songs from his solo career as well as other Beatles tunes, like "Lady Madonna," when images and footage of successful women in history -- including Olympic champion and former Tennessee State University track star Wilma Rudolph -- on screens behind the band, USA Today said Saturday.

Also performing Friday were rocker Jason Isbell and alternative-rock duo Japandroids.

On Saturday, Jack Johnson was scheduled to take over the headlining spot for Mumford and Sons, who had to cancel their appearance after bassist Ted Dwane received treatment for a blood clot in his brain, the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Times Free-Press reported Saturday.

"I love playing here. It's a place for collaboration. Bands feel connected here," Johnson said. "There is a lot of music that happens backstage, but I'm happy to fill in. We will do our best."
