UPI News Service, 06/13/2013

The U.S. Navy announced its new system for official messages will bring lowercase letters into the messages for the first time.

Navy officials said messages in all capital letters will become a thing of the past in August when the new system, the Command and Control Office Information Exchange, goes online.

"Lowercase messages are here to stay; they provide a more readable format, which can be delivered to and shared on any of the current Web 3.0 technologies [chat, portals, wikis, blogs, etc.]," said James McCarty, the naval messaging program manager at U.S. Fleet Cyber Command.

McCarty said the new system will save money and be more efficient than the previous system.

"The Navy gains significant cost efficiencies by eliminating the current Defense Message System infrastructure and simply using the existing email infrastructure for final delivery," he said. "By utilizing this methodology we will be able to send messages at 10 percent of the cost and size of current systems."
