Cocaine found in banana shipments from Colombia

Police in Denmark said workers for a supermarket chain discovered more than 440 pounds of cocaine in banana shipments from Colombia during the past week.

Police inspector Bent Isager-Nielsen said workers at a Brondby warehouse for supermarket chain Coop found about 275 pounds of cocaine in a pallet of bananas and another 176 pounds of the drug were found in a banana shipment at a warehouse in Hasselager, The Copenhagen Post/Jyllands-Posten reported Friday.

Isager-Nielsen said the warehouse workers immediately contacted police.

"Coop reacted as it should," Isager-Nielsen said. "We have no suspicion of irregularity at the Coop warehouse."

Police said the cocaine had a total estimated street value of more than $14 million.

Coop spokesperson Jens Juul Nielsen said he Colombian supplier has been contacted.

"We have informed our supplier in Colombia about it," Nielsen said. "They check the goods before they are shipped to Europe so they wondered how this could happen and are now working to improve the control."
