Speeding cyclists to face fines on California trail

UPI News Service, 06/07/2013

Officials in California's Sacramento County said cyclists exceeding 15 miles per hour on a popular trail could soon receive $50 citations.

County Regional Parks Chief Ranger Stan Lumsden said rangers will be posted along the American River Parkway with radar guns and will be prepared to write citations to cyclists exceeding the speed limit on the trail, The Sacramento Bee reported Friday.

"If cyclists want to open it up, they really need to go out on the roadway," Lumsden said. "This is a multiuse trail with pedestrians, dogs, horses, strollers and joggers."

Lumsden said the speed limit has been in place for some time but is only now being enforced because of recent speed-related crashes involving bicycles on the trail.

"People say it's a long time coming," Lumsden said.

County officials said second-time offenders will face $100 fines.
