Man convicted of snake bite lie

UPI News Service, 02/15/2013

A Georgia man was convicted by a jury of lying to federal officers about being bitten by a black mamba snake.

John Rosenbaum Jr., 24, was found guilty of one count of making false statements to federal officers after he told investigators he was bitten Nov. 21, 2011, by a venomous black mamba snake he claimed to have been attempting to buy in a Kingsland parking lot, The Brunswick (Ga.) News reported Friday.

Authorities said Rosenbaum carried out the hoax because he was actually bitten by his own Egyptian banded cobra and wanted to keep the information from his employer and his wife. They said he kept up the charade because he liked the attention he was receiving online and in the media for surviving a black mamba bite.

U.S. District Chief Judge Lisa Godbey Wood denied bond for Rosenbaum and said he will be sentenced at a later date.
