A Canadian businessman has rescued 20 dogs from being euthanized at Quebec shelters and transferred them to Toronto for adoption.

Lou Tucci, co-owner of Royal Envelope Ltd., said he heard about the dogs' situation from Barbara Steinhoff, executive director of the Toronto Humane Society, and decided to do something about it, the Toronto Star reported.

"It was a no-brainer to step in and provide the funding to save their lives," he said.

The dogs arrived at the Toronto Humane Society Saturday where they were assessed medically and given vaccination shots. Tucci estimated that the cost of moving the dogs was about $800.

Zana Ellis, the society's director of programs and services, encouraged other corporations to participate in sponsored transfers.

"This is about second chances," Ellis said. "These are dogs that nobody wants."
