Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" has set a record for highest-grossing R-rated Christmas release in the United States, its producers said.
The The Weinstein Co. release grossed $15 million when it opened on 3,010 screens in North America Tuesday. It has earned $34 million in its first three days in theaters.
Starring Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson, the film is set in the 19th-century American South.
It is about a German bounty hunter, who frees a slave in exchange for his help in tracking and killing his enemies.
He then works to reunite the man with his wife, who was bought by a wealthy plantation owner.
