The French cartoonist, whose work featuring alien-world imagery had an impact on pop culture and contributed to the look of films such as "Alien" and "Tron," died after a battle with cancer either late Friday night or Saturday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

He was 73. It is unclear where he died.

His singular and strange visions in comics attracted fans such as George Lucas, James Cameron, Stan Lee, Hayao Miyazaki and Ridley Scott.

Former French Culture Minister Jack Lang said Giraud was unique in his vision.

"Moebius has become a comic-book icon," Lang said. "In the '70s and '80s he was the figurehead of this unique art form in France."

Scott sought out Moebius to contribute to the look of his 1979 space-horror classic "Alien."

Born in Paris in 1938, he had little formal art training but by the time he was 18 his first comic tales were being published in magazines.

Fans of Girard said the attraction of his alien worlds was their believability.

"The inspiration I always felt from the art of Moebius was that I believed he truly saw the imagery he depicted and was actually not making it up," said Rick Carter, a production designer who won an Oscar for "Avatar."

"His imagery appears as if it was sketched from a real-life subconscious world/existence."
