Entertainer Bette Midler has joined the producing team of "Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical," the stage show's producers announced.
The musical began a pre-Broadway engagement Tuesday at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, prior to beginning performances at Broadway's Palace Theatre in New York Feb. 28. Its official Broadway opening is set for March 20.
Midler famously starred in her eponymous stage show at the Palace Theatre in 1973.
"A new star on Broadway and her name is Priscilla! So much fun, it's practically illegal! In fact, it is illegal in four states," Midler said in a statement.
"Not only is Bette Midler a great friend to the Nederlander family, she is also one of the most hyphenated people I know," added James L. Nederlander on behalf of the producing team. "She is a remarkable actress and performer; a brilliant writer and lyricist; and, an accomplished director. Bette's insight has already proved to be invaluable on 'Priscilla.' We are thrilled that she wants to join us on the bus for this magnificent adventure."
The musical is adapted from the 1994 film "The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert," starring Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce. It follows a group of drag queens traveling by private bus across the Australian outback.
