Sarah Chang says she canceled her planned performance Monday at Detroit's Orchestra Hall so as not to cross striking musicians' picket line.

The Detroit Free Press reported Chang scrapped the gig because of criticism she said she received through her Web site from striking Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians and their supporters.
"My original intention to bring music to the community has been derailed, and I have been unwillingly drawn into an inner dispute that does not appropriately involve me," Chang said in a statement Sunday.
The DSO musicians went on strike Oct. 4 in protest of a new contract implemented by management. Chang had since been encouraged by union musicians across the United States to cancel her recital.
"The musicians of the DSO and professional musicians around the country are very grateful to Sarah Chang for her powerful gesture in refusing to play the replacement concert. ... I feel very sorry if she or her manager received any communication which could be perceived as threatening," the newspaper quoted DSO representative Haden McKay as saying.
