The Calgary Jazz Festival, which had been set to begin Monday, was canceled due to a lack of funding, organizers said.

Interim festival President Richard Sherry told the Calgary Herald the alleged mismanagement of funds by the non-profit meant festival planners did not have the money they needed for day-to-day expenses or to pay the artists they booked.

"We decided the lesser of the two evils was to pull the plug now, rather than halfway through the festival," Sherry said. "We feel sick about it."

Details on refunds for tickets are still being worked out, but are expected to be announced soon, the Herald said.

The lineup was to include Chick Corea and Ben E. King.
