FX is becoming the HBO of basic cable in picking up Iraq war drama "Over There" and robbery drama "Thief," Daily Variety reported.

FX's decision to pick up the two shows gives it five original dramas, more than any other ad-supported U.S. cable network.
"We've certainly gotten some amazing support" from Fox Cable Networks and News Corp, FX Entertainment President John Landgraf said. "We knew we had two really strong shows on our hands, but for us to get the go-ahead to pick up both dramas after we just ordered two comedies was both surprising and encouraging."
This summer will be the real test for FX when it launches its first comedy block, as well as expanded reality TV show programming, Daily Variety reported. FX already is challenging HBO in critical acclaim and ground-breaking content for its shows.
